What pH Level is Your Sunscreen, and Why Should You Care?

Does Sunscreen pH Matter? Here’s What You Need to Know

While pH is a familiar concept in skincare, it’s rarely discussed in sunscreen. That’s a gap worth closing, because pH plays a quiet but important role in how a sunscreen feels, performs, and interacts with your skin.

At KINeSYS, sun protection education is a core part of what we do, because better-informed choices lead to better outcomes for your skin.

Let's dive into why the pH of your sunscreen matters.

What is pH?

pH (short for “potential of hydrogen”) is simply a way to describe how acidic or alkaline something is. It applies to everything from soil and water to the products we use on our skin.

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14: lower numbers are more acidic, higher numbers are more alkaline, and 7 is considered neutral.

What pH levels are safe for your skin?

Your skin naturally sits in a slightly acidic range, typically between 4.5 and 5.5. Keeping products, especially sunscreen, within or close to that range helps minimise irritation and supports how your skin is meant to function.

This slightly acidic surface, often called the skin barrier, plays an important role in defending against pollutants, bacteria, and environmental stress.

A beauty product, whether it’s makeup, skincare, or sunscreen, with an alkaline pH level will not only be uncomfortable to wear, it will potentially cause irritation or long-term damage to your skin.

Using products which are too alkaline can also affect the enzymes in your skin. The enzymes responsible for breaking down collagen, for example, are activated by alkaline products.

Using products with suitable pH levels is therefore a powerful tool in preventing premature ageing, and in taking care of your skin’s health and natural defences.

What are the pH levels of your sunscreen?

pH levels are not often discussed when it comes to sunscreens, so knowing their levels can be challenging.
